Scene from: Aïda

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Conductor: García Navarro

Sam Wanamaker's production for San Francisco Opera features monumental sets, lavish costumes and spectacular pageantry, all in the most opulent of colours. It was also acclaimed for the wonderful performances by its stars: Margaret Price, singing the role of Aïda for the first time in the United States, and Luciano Pavarotti, making his debut in the role of Radames.
The outstanding cast also includes Stefania Toczyska (singing her first Amneris), Kurt Rydl, Kevin Langan and Simon Estes. The Orchestra and Chorus of the San Francisco Opera is conducted by García Navarro, who made his American opera debut with this production.
This Aïda was one of the first productions by San Francisco Opera to be telecast live-by-satellite to Europe. Demand to see it was so enormous that for the first time in history, a closed-circuit television relay was transmitted at the Civic Auditorium on a giant screen, a few days after the premiere.
Filmed at the War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco, in 1981.

Cast: Aida - Margaret Price, Radames - Luciano Pavarotti, Ramfis - Kurt Rydl, Amneris - Stefania Toczyska, The King of Egypt - Kevin Langan, Amonasro - Simon Estes.
