Scene from: Arabella

Composer: Richard Strauss
Conductor: Bernard Haitink

Filmed in the old theatre in 1984, Arabella tells of the complications which surround the heroine's betrothal to a rich landowner. With its romantic Viennese plot and its lush waltz-time melodies this amorous comedy has often been compared to Der Rosenkavalier. However, ever since the Bavarian State Opera brought this elegant piece to London in 1953 it has been recognised as a masterpiece in its own right. Written with craft and detail by Richard Strauss, the opera benefits from careful staging, scrupulous preparation and intimacy, all qualities in which Glyndebourne excels.

Set amid Julia Trevelyan Oman's authentically stylish designs, Ashley Putnam sings the title role "portrayed with impassioned and lyrical grace" (Daily Telegraph), and John Brocheler as Mandryka is "...a gifted Dutch Baritone" (Financial Times) under the baton of fellow Dutchman and former Glyndebourne Musical Director Bernard Haitink, who draws a glowing performance from the London Philharmonic. Directed by John Cox.

"John Cox's marvellous production not only crowns his Strauss Cycle, but is one of the finest one could hope to encounter." DAILY TELEGRAPH

Cast: Ash Putnam, John Bröcheler, Gianna Rolandi, Regina Sarfaty, Artur Korn, Keith Lewis.
