Scene from: Carmen

Composer: George Bizet
Conductor: Bernard Haitink

Filmed at the old theatre at Glyndebourne in 1985, Glyndebourne's production of Carmen, George Bizet's indisputable operatic masterpiece, is a torrid drama of passion, blood and squalor. This production stars Maria Ewing as Carmen, Barry McCauley as Don José and Marie McLaughlin as Micaëla.
When it opened in 1875 it was considered "a shocker", not least for Carmen's blatant sexuality and her readiness to discard men. The opera sets conventionally comic and sentimental scenes alongside stark realism and a tale of risqué morality. Its exoticism is due to more than just the Spanish setting of the tavern and smugglers' hide out; the bullring and the outrageous behaviour of the cigarette girls brought a new dimension to the operatic stage. Sung in the original French, this production is directed by Peter Hall. Bernard Haitink conducts the London Philharmonic and Glyndebourne Chorus.

"Maria Ewing's portrayal of the gypsy Carmen is nothing short of electric. Her dark alluring looks and feline grace are exactly suited to playing the hot-blooded Spanish temptress ... Maria Ewing is that rare combination, the gifted singer with outstanding acting ability."
SUNDAY TIMES

One of the few indisputable masterpieces of its time written for a small theatre, the skill and clarity of Bizet's orchestration is lost in many of the large opera houses. Glyndebourne provides just the right intimate atmosphere for this...outstanding production."
