Scene from: Dame Kiri Te Kanawa: My World of Opera

Composer: Various
Conductor: Various

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has, for many years, been one of the world's great soprano stars, known to a wide audience for her performances of a broad range of music styles. In this programme she introduces a personal selection of her own favourite operatic scenes recorded at some of the world's major venues, and shares with viewers her recollections of memorable performances from the world of opera.

Shot on location at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, (prior to its closure for refurbishment), Dame Kiri shows us around this magnificent opera house with which she is so familiar, from its most elegant staircase to the auditorium, and backstage to her dressing room, then on to the Royal Opera House shop and to the costume department.

She introduces the audience to each performance extract; from the Royal Opera House comes Offenbach's Tales Of Hoffmann starring Placido Domingo in the opening tavern scene; Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier in which Dame Kiri herself sings a beautiful trio with Anne Howells and Barbara Bonney, conducted by Sir Georg Solti; Verdi's Don Carlo starring Robert Lloyd, Puccini's La Bohème with Ileana Cotrubas, and Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus in which Dame Kiri sings The Czardas.

Performance extracts from La Scala, Milan, are Verdi's Ernani starring Placido Domingo, Giordano's Andrea Chénier with José Carreras, and Verdi's Nabucco in which the chorus sings 'Va pensiero' conducted by Riccardo Muti. While introducing the extract from Verdi's Otello, recorded at the open-air Arena di Verona, Dame Kiri recalls the difficulties encountered during the recording by herself and Vladimir Atlantov, as Desdemona and Otello, in having to compete with the Italian victory celebrations for the world cup football match.

Dame Kiri's final choice of venue is Glyndebourne, the beautiful opera house in the English countryside, from which we see extracts from Rossini's La Cenerentola starring Kathleen Kuhlmann, and Gluck's Orfeo Ed Euridice in which Janet Baker sings the lovely aria Che farò senza Euridice?
