Through the testimony of those who were closest to Nureyev, and with the support of the Nureyev Foundation and the Paris Opera, Dancing Through Darkness tells the compelling story of one of the most important artistic figures this century.

Directed by Teresa Griffiths, the film focuses on Nureyev's career after his controversial appointment in 1983 to restore the decaying Paris Opera Ballet to a centre of excellence, and later, from when tragedy first struck in 1984, when he was diagnosed HIV positive which later progressed into AIDS. During his silent fight with this horrific disease, Nureyev suffered much, but continued to work right up until his death in 1993. This is a documentary about the power of one man's creative vision, a genius trapped in a dying body. Above all it shows one man's struggle to transcend the desperate confines of mortality, a man who literally tried to cheat death by doing what he loved most - dancing.
