Scene from: David Helfgott – A Musical Journey.

Composer: Mendelssohn, Liszt, Beethoven
Conductor:

David Helfgott was catapulted into the public eye following the release of Shine, the critically acclaimed film which told his life story. Helfgott was a child prodigy, a brilliant young pianist cut down in his prime by mental illness, but against all odds he made a miraculous comeback, once again playing prestigious concert venues.

This South Bank Show opens at the end of a concert David gave at London's Royal Festival Hall, where Melvyn Bragg met him and his wife Gillian backstage. Later, David talks to Melvyn about his student days. The interview is intercut with extracts from the film Shine (UK versions only, international versions have stills from the film) and interviews with others who remember David from that time. They also discuss the origins of Shine, its success and the factual controversy of the film. Scott Hicks, the director of Shine and Margaret Helfgott, David's sister, contribute to the debate.

David discusses his return tour to the U.S., his reception by the public and his critics. The critics give their reaction to David's concert performances along with the general public. David and Gillian also discuss openly the nature of David's breakdown, the current state of his health and his plan to play the Rach 3 again later this year.

The video concludes with over 40 minutes of extra concert footage, not broadcast in the LWT South Bank Show on 22nd June 1997, from David's recital from the 2,000-seat Royal Nottingham Concert Hall. The concert repertoire includes Mendelssohn's Andante & Rondo Capriccioso in E minor, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 and "Un Sospiro" Concert Etude No. 3 and Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata No. 23 in F minor.
