Scene from: Der Fliegende Holländer

Composer: Richard Wagner
Conductor: Leif Segerstam

The central courtyard of Olavinlinna Castle, a 500-year-old fortress on an island in the middle of a lake, is the majestic setting for this production of Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer. The opera is based on the legend of the Dutch sea-captain who unsuccessfully attempted to sail round the Cape of Good Hope - and swore to keep on trying even if he had to sail forever.

The Devil, overhearing the oath, condemned him to sail the seas eternally, until Judgement Day, unless he could find a woman who would love him faithfully unto death. Once in every seven years the Dutchman is allowed to come ashore in search of the woman who will redeem him by her love, and it is on such a visit that the events of Wagner's opera take place. Senta, the woman who offers him her love, her father, Daland, and The Dutchman, are amongst the greatest singing and acting roles. They are taken by three of the greatest Wagnerian singers and recording stars of our generation: Hildegard Behrens is Senta, Matti Salminen is Daland and Franz Grundheber is the Dutchman.
