Scene from: Il Trovatore

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Conductor: Reynald Giovaninetti

Written at the peak of Giuseppe Verdi's career, Il Trovatore is set in 15th century Spain and vividly illustrates the composer's genius for melodrama. Both music and plot proceed swiftly from royal palaces to mountainous gypsy camps, through fights, an abduction, deceit and passion to the final poisonous death of the heroine and the execution of her lover, the Troubadour.
A stirring work of worldwide popularity, this production of Il Trovatore, from the Arena di Verona, features the talents of British soprano Rosalind Plowright in her Verona debut as Leonora, a wealth of vocal experience from Fiorenza Cossotto as the gypsy Azucena, Giorgio Zancanaro's strong portrayal of the Count di Luna and Franco Bonisolli in fine voice as the Troubadour, Manrico.
The imposing grandeur of the Arena di Verona provides the ideal setting for Il Trovatore with stage designs by the distinguished sculptor Mario Ceroli and the Orchestra of the Arena in superb form under the experienced hand of Reynald Giovaninetti.
