Scene from: L 'Incoronazione di Poppea

Composer: Claudio Monteverdi
Conductor: Raymond Leppard

Filmed in the old theatre in 1984, L 'Incoronazione di Poppea was chosen for the 1984 Fiftieth Anniversary Year of Glyndebourne Festival Opera to reflect some of the composers and works which have been particularly significant in the history of the festival. Starring Maria Ewing, Dennis Bailey and Cynthia Clarey, this opera was the first Baroque opera to be performed there in 1962 and has been an important influence on the present interest in early operatic repertoire. It is Monteverdi's last opera and tells the amoral story of the Roman Emperor Nero's love affair with the scheming and seductive Poppea where evil triumphs over good, while the allegorical figures from the Prologue - Fortune, Virtue and Love look on.

This sparkling production by Sir Peter Hall is designed by John Bury and conducted by Raymond Leppard, the celebrated authority on Baroque music, who made this modern edition of the opera and has conducted his edition in many opera houses worldwide.

"Maria Ewing's marvellously subtle, unnerving Poppea...warmly sung".
FINANCIAL TIMES
