Scene from: Lulu

Composer: Alban Berg
Conductor: Andrew Davies

Alban Berg's black, satirical opera, Lulu, in a provocative production for Glyndebourne by Graham Vick, is one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. Based on a pair of once-banned plays by the fin de siècle satirist Frank Wedekind, it charts the rise and fall of a serial seductress, from life as a society hostess to eventual death at the hands of Jack the Ripper. Left uncompleted on the composer's tragically early death, Lulu is at once a pioneering work of musical modernism and a lyrical outpouring of a dying man's obsession for another man's wife.

"Altogether it's a superbly realised and revelatory evening"
