Scene from: Mlada

Composer: Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Conductor: Alexander Lazarev

Rimsky-Korsakov described Mlada as a "magical opera-ballet" and it is indeed one of the most energetic works in the operatic canon, with singers, dancers, chorus and on-stage musicians, who bring the stage alive with sound, movement, colour, merriment, searing love and evil passions.

Mlada is a story of early Slavs, prior to Christian conversion. Boris Pokrovsky's acclaimed production, recorded on the stage of the magnificent Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, captures the essence of the Bolshoi's traditions of drama and realism, and is complemented by Andrei Petrov's inspired choreography, with its amazing variety of ritual dances. Dancing is indeed the crux of Mlada, which can be described more as a ballet with a vocal score rather than an opera with dancing. Designer Valéry Levental has created breathtaking fantasy effects, immersed in the traditions of Slavonic art. The stage is transformed into a panorama of stunning, bizarre and ever-changing delights.
