Scene from: Turandot

Composer: Giacomo Puccini
Conductor: Maurizio Arena

Giacomo Puccini's maturity can be perceived in the expert delineation of the heroine, Princess Turandot - perhaps the strongest and most clearly defined character to emerge from his life's work. Puccini manages to combine this character study with techniques assimilated from his previous operas: dramatic heroism, lyric sentimentality, grotesque comedy, an integral, narrative chorus and delight in exotic surroundings.
Turandot calls for the largest orchestral resources ever required by Puccini and this sumptuous grandeur is entirely suited to the vast Arena di Verona, which is the setting for this recording. The Italian Press was full of praise for this production. Cecilia Gasdia sang "with exceptional sweetness and sensitivity", whilst Ghena Dimitrova's portrayal of the cruel princess was "suitably aggressive and barbaric." The courageous Calaf was also very well interpreted by Nicola Martinucci, whose performance of the now legendary Nessun Dorma is quite electrifying.
Maurizio Arena conducts the Chorus and Orchestra of the Arena di Verona.

"Cecilia Gasdia's role as Liù was splendidly interpreted ... As always happens, the atmosphere of the Arena bathed in candlelight and the warmth of the audience lent itself to this rich and lively spectacular."

Turandot is better heard and seen rather that just being heard alone. This version of the Opera is by far the best version on video at this time. I have seen all versions of Turandot in video but this stands to be the best. A classic staging of Puccini's recklessly opulent final work!
