Scene from: Don Carlo

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Conductor: Bernard Haitink

Opera is arguably the best medium for dramatising the workings of history and this is particularly true of Verdi's Don Carlo in Luchino Viconti's magnificent and definitive production. Set in France and Spain in the late 16th century, the opera tells of the political and amorous rivalry between Philip II of Spain and his son, Don Carlo. Performed in Italian, this live recording was described by The Times as "an exhilarating experience."

Cast:
