Scene from: Giselle
Composer: Adolphe Adam
Conductor: Viktor Fedotov
Giselle was filmed at one of the world's most beautiful theatres, the Kirov Theatre in St. Petersburg. The title role in this romantic ballet is danced by Galina Mezentseva, one of the greatest ballerinas of the Kirov. She is joined by Konstantin Zaklinsky as Albrecht, who continues the unsurpassed Russian tradition of handsome and athletic male dancers.
The role of Giselle has been compared to that of Hamlet due to the double challenge of its central role. She is a simple peasant girl, driven from joy to madness and death through an unhappy love, who becomes a ghost ordered to help destroy the man who betrayed her, while still seeking to sustain him because of her undying love. This Kirov production offers a choreographic text and dramatic understanding which result from the company's preservation of this ballet and its traditions over many years.
