He's been called a pied piper and a pop musician par excellence, but Ireland's James Galway, the world's best-known flautist, is mostly celebrated for his outstanding musical talent, his enthusiasm, and his efforts to redefine the boundaries of classical and popular music. His unique tone has sold millions of recordings and won him many awards over the last two decades.
In 1999, the year of his sixtieth birthday, Galway undertook his first major recital tour of Britain in a decade; returning to his native Belfast to play in the new Waterfront Hall. This video features a 90-minute recital with the pianist Phillip Moll and guest performer Jeanne Galway. It also includes a 52-minute South Bank Show documentary in which Melvyn Bragg profiles "the man with the golden flute". A man who is equally at ease with the modern French music of Dutilleux as he is with Irish band, The Chieftains.
Speaking to Melvyn Bragg, Galway gives a fascinating account of his childhood years and first teachers, his scholarship to The Royal College of Music in London, his time as Principal Flautist for the Berlin Philharmonic under von Karajan and his subsequent resignation which set his career on a different track. Entertaining and insightful, this documentary reveals Galway as a man of great artistic depth as well as dedication, generosity and humour.
