Scene from: Aïda

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Conductor: Anton Guadagno

Filmed in 1981, Aïda is a marvellous blend of human emotion and grand spectacle. The scene in which Radames, commander of the Egyptian Army marches his triumphant troops and their Ethiopian captives through the streets of Thebes is as splendid as any in the operatic repertoire. The tensions which arise from Radames' (sung by Nicola Martinucci) love for Aïda (sung by Maria Chiara), a slave who is the daughter of the Ethiopian chieftain, Amonasro (sung by Giuseppe Scandola), and the jealousy this love provokes in Amneris (Fiorenza Cossotto), daughter of the Egyptian king, are portrayed in some of Verdi's most memorable music.
This production of Aïda was recorded in the famous Roman Arena di Verona, which has become celebrated for the performers as well as for the spectacular quality of its staging.

"This version of Aïda is undoubtedly among the best open-air performances in recent years."
