Scene from: Andrea Chénier

Composer: Umberto Giordano
Conductor: Riccardo Chailly

Set in Paris at the time of the French revolution, Andrea Chénier is Giordano's passionate and most successful opera. It tells of the love of Maddalena di Coigny for the idealistic poet, Chénier. Gérard, a former servant in the Coigny household, has become an important figure in the revolution. He is also in love with Maddalena and is torn between his political and amorous loyalties. When Gérard is elevated to the revolutionary court he wreaks his revenge on Chénier by writing an indictment against him. Chénier is condemned to death. Maddalena joins him in his prison cell and they go to the guillotine together.
