Scene from: Der Rosenkavalier

Composer: Richard Strauss
Conductor: Georg Solti

A "comedy for music" is the original description of the libretto for Der Rosenkavalier which the exceptionally gifted and imaginative Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote for Richard Strauss. This opulent production by Oscar-winning John Schlesinger, marked the 25th anniversary of Sir Georg Solti's spectacular debut at The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, conducting Der Rosenkavalier – an appearance that rocketed him within months to a 10-year Music Directorship of Covent Garden, a historic period for opera in Britain.
"Rarely has this luscious, burnished score been realised with such emotional intensity or played with such glowing fervour."
THE DAILY MAIL
It also features Kiri Te Kanawa's first London Marschallin, "This deserves to be ranked beside her early Countesses, Desdemonas and Elviras – that is, among her finest achievements." FINANCIAL TIMES. Anne Howells gives a sensitive performance as the "Knight of the Rose", Aage Haugland is the roguish Baron Ochs and the American soprano Barbara Bonney is ..... "an enchantingly vulnerable Sophie, as lovely to hear ... as she is to behold."
INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE
"With a superb cast of principals, all singing their parts for the first time at the House, the evening turned out a resounding success."
