Scene from: Die Fledermaus

Composer: Johann Strauss
Conductor: Placido Domingo

Die Fledermaus is the best-known and most-loved operetta by the King of the Waltz – Johann Strauss the younger. An international array of talent appears in this traditional Viennese comedy with Kiri Te Kanawa as Rosalind, Hermann Prey as Eisenstein, Hildegard Heichele as Adèle and Benjamin Luxon as Falke. The glittering party given by Prince Orlofsky, here sung by the mezzo Doris Soffel welcomes some surprise celebrities for this special gala performance from Covent Garden, including Hinge and Bracket, Charles Aznavour, Merle Park and Wayne Eagling in Sir Frederick Ashton's "Frühlingstimmen".

Placido Domingo makes his British conducting debut – "Under (him) ... Strauss's zestful, tuneful comedy fizzes along like musical champagne."
