Scene from: Ernani

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Conductor: Riccardo Muti

This outstandingly successful production of Verdi's tragic opera stars Placido Domingo as the bandit Ernani; Renato Bruson as the scheming, suave, King Charles of Spain; Nicolai Ghiaurov, as the proud Spanish Grandee and Mirella Freni, as the gentle heroine. Described as "... possibly the best quartet of singers any opera house has managed to assemble this year." THE TIMES, they give impassioned performances under the baton of conductor, Riccardo Muti, an acclaimed Verdi interpreter.
Ernani was written in 1844 and is Verdi's fifth opera. It is based on Victor Hugo's play which received a tumultuous reception in 1830, marking a turning point in the development of romantic drama. The director, Luca Ronconi, has created a totally convincing production for this drama of jealousy and tragic death, trickery and deceit.
Recorded at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in 1982.

"Altogether an evening completely up to the standards and great traditions of the best opera house in the world"
