Scene from: Manon Lescaut

Composer: Giacomo Puccini
Conductor: Giuseppe Sinopoli

Puccini wrote to his publisher, Giulio Ricordi, "Manon is a herorine I believe in, and therefore she cannot fail to win the heart of the public." At the première in Turin, the composer's conviction was vindicated. In this staging by the eminent German producer, Götz Friedrich, for The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Kiri Te Kanawa sings the title role for the first time. Placido Domingo as Des Grieux and Thomas Allen as Lescaut also star in an exceptionally strong cast under the Italian conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli.

"Mr. Sinopoli well shows why he so quickly becomes one of the opera world's hottest properties. He actually is hot: he sets scores ablaze."
