Scene from: Tosca

Composer: Giacomo Puccini
Conductor: Daniel Oren

Tosca is set in Rome amid the potitical and religious upheavals of the turn of the 18th century. Cavaradossi (sung by Giacomo Aragall), a painter, and Tosca (sung by Eva Marton), the famous singer, are lovers. Cavaradossi is imprisoned for his part in the escape of a fellow supporter of the Republican Party. Scarpia (sung by Ingvar Wixell), the sinister Chief of Police, longs to possess Tosca himself. He tortures Cavaradossi by telling Tosca, within earshot of Cavaradossi, that she can only save her lover's life by giving herself to him. Tosca agrees, but seeing a knife seizes the opportunity of stabbing Scarpia to death. It is only after Cavaradossi's so-called "mock" execution that Tosca realises that Scarpia has finally tricked her - her lover is dead. In total despair Tosca flings herself off the high parapet of the Castel Sant'Angelo in one of the most tragic operatic endings.
Daniel Oren conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Arena di Verona.
